Cindy Foust, author and president of AlphaKidz, recently visited the 8G preK classes at Pinecrest and Woodlawn Elementary. What a treat it was for these preK children to hear Cindy read two of the AlphaKidz books that she authored, and then to participate in a craft project related to the books! Thanks to Cindy and 8G!!

| GHMS Students: ''Who's Arguing About Writing?'' |
 |
At Good Hope Middle School, Ms. Natalie Williams' 6th grade English students dissected the writing scoring rubric for understanding and clarity in preparation for the iLeap. Once students were familiar and confident with using the scoring rubric they were ready to begin measuring their peer’s written compositions.
The students brought proofreading, editing, and revising to life through a student engaged courtroom setting. Each student critiqued and argued anonymous writing compositions through the lenses of either a defense attorney or a prosecuting attorney. A student bailiff swore students in according to the grammar textbook oath. A student time keeper recorded the time for each attorney arguing each writing case. The student attorney presented the findings before a student judge. The student judge tallied each attorneys arguments based on the most accurate or inaccurate grammar and language usage to determine the winner of the case.
Staying in line with the Common Core State Standards, writing court allows learners to engage effectively in a range of collaborative discussions (one-on-one, groups, and teacher-led) with diverse partners on grade 6 topics, texts, and issues, building on others’ ideas and expressing their own clearly. Learners are able to delineate a speaker’s argument and specific claims, distinguishing claims that are supported by reasons and evidence from claims that are not. The most beneficial outcome for writing court is that it allows the learners to write arguments to support claims in an analysis of substantive topics or texts, using valid reasoning and relevant and sufficient evidence.
Community Involvement: Attorneys have visited the classroom to share their knowledge as it relates to the topic and relevance to test taking tips that will guide students to prepare for any criterion or norm referenced test. Special thanks to Attorney Jessica Williams and Attorney Rick Odom.
