WM Chamber and OPSS Seek Program Support
The West Monroe – West Ouachita Chamber of Commerce and the Ouachita Parish School Board is pleased to announce Ouachita Parish Schools “Employees of Distinction” 2010 Adopt-A-School Banquet. This event has combined the Teacher of the Year, Principal of the Year, Support Employee of the Year, and National Board Certified Teachers recognitions into one program. The event will be held late in May.
The Adopt-A-School Task Force has been working diligently in preparing for this event. But in order to make it a meaningful night, we need the help of local businesses in providing financial support to cover the cost of catering, plaques, and other incidentals. Your contribution will entitle your organization’s name to be printed on invitations, programs, and special recognition at the event and in the media releases.

NOW ACCEPTING NOMINATIONS FOR PRINCIPAL OF THE YEAR
Would you like to nominate a principal for Principal of the Year? Letters of nomination are being accepted for 2010 Ouachita Parish Principal of the Year in the elementary, middle and high school divisions. To be eligible for nomination, a candidate must be an active practicing principal with at least five years of experience.
Teachers, students, parents, community members, support staff, other principals, anyone can cast their vote by sending letters via one of the following:

SPRING 2010 CHANGE IN LEAP/GEE TESTING DATES
LEAP and GEE tests for 4th, 8th, 10th, and 11th grade students will be administered in two parts beginning in March. The first part of the test, Phase 1, will be given on March 23, 2010. The second part of the test, Phase 2, will be given April 12 - 16, 2010. All students who participate in LEAP and GEE testing must take both phases to receive a complete score on the test.
Parents of home-schooled students (grades 4, 8, 10, and 11) who reside in Ouachita Parish, and would like for their students to be tested should contact the school closest to their home to schedule testing. Please contact the school by Wednesday, March 10, 2010 to schedule testing for LEAP/GEE.

announce parish finalists in the 2010-2011 Teacher of the Year Awards program:

Elementary Teacher of the Year
Diane Roberts,
Middle School Teacher of the Year
Maria ‘Marty’ Bumgart,
High School Teacher of the Year
The parish recognized all thirty-six
Teachers of the Year in a luncheon where announcements were made of the three finalists who will
represent the parish in the next phase of competition vying for
Region VIII Teacher of the Year
titles. In addition, the ‘Top Five
Contenders’ were recognized at the elementary level.
Teachers underwent a stringent
interview process for the parish award which mirrors the state’s
program for selecting Louisiana Teachers of the Year. After completing a twelve-page application packet consisting of narrative style Q & A, the teachers presented speeches and interviewed before a panel of judges including peers, past
winners, parents, and community leaders. Every panel member
expressed the difficulty in choosing only one teacher at each level from the many wonderful, deserving, highly-qualified applicants.
About the Winners
Chantay teaches third grade
students at A. L. Smith Elementary. She has been with the district for 12 years.
Diane is an 8th grade Language Arts teacher at Ouachita Junior High. She has been teaching for 5 years,
2 in Ouachita Parish.
Marty teaches grade 10 English at
Sterlington High School. She has taught in the district for 9 years.

| Happy 106th... Dr. Seuss!! |
|
Twenty-one second graders from Woodlawn Elementary wished Dr. Seuss a Happy Birthday on March 2. A visitor from the Ouachita Parish Sheriff's Department read Green Eggs and Ham. Deputy Sheriff Cody Custer delivered a most exciting ... Sam I am, I do not like Green Eggs and Ham! He talked about "good choices" and "bad choices" as he finished reading. He said, "Dr. Seuss knew this was a ‘good choice’ because eggs are delicious, but some people make ‘bad choices’!” He discussed some choices the students needed to know as they grow. That same afternoon, the students enjoyed cake shaped as the "hat" from the undeniable character... Cat in the Hat... with ice cream and juice while celebrating the 106th birthday of Dr. Seuss. Thank you Deputy Custer for your reading skills, your time, and the good advice.

| WMHS Quiz Bowl Team Places at Competition |
|
The West Monroe High School Quiz Bowl team competed in its first tournament last Saturday at the ULM Honor's College Quiz Bowl Competition. The double elimination tournament placed them in competition with ten teams from seven area schools. Despite their rookie status, the team won every match and received the first place trophy. The members of the competition team are Ethan Breland, Jordan Campbell, Colton Cranford, Ellis Michael – captain, and Andrew Seanor. Sponsors are Mrs. Paula Rutledge and Mrs. Mitzi Murray. Congratulations guys!

| GHMS Student Qualifies for State Geography Bee |
|
Adam Loe, 8th grade student at Good Hope Middle School, recently qualified for the National Geographic State Geography Bee in Baton Rouge on April 9, 2010. Loe won the GHMS Geography Bee in January and completed the qualifying test. He is one of only 100 students chosen statewide to participate in the state competition. He also becomes the fourth consecutive GHMS student to qualify for the state competition. We wish him the very best of luck.

| West Monroe High School Guest Speaker Day |
|
The Freshman Success classes at West Monroe High School recently hosted a Guest Speaker Day in the library. Ninth grade students were given the opportunity to practice communication and speaking skills they have been learning about in their Freshman Success classes. A distinguished panel of thirty community leaders with varying careers was assembled so every class period had the opportunity to find out what makes these leaders successful. The Freshman Success teachers would like to thank all of the guest panelists, students, and administration for helping make this event possible.

| OJHS Collects Pull Tabs for Ronald McDonald House |
|
The Ouachita Junior High School student body recently collected and donated approximately 110 pounds of pull tabs to the Ronald McDonald House. The pull tabs are recycled to help in the maintenance and daily operations of the house.
Mrs. Amanda Crain's class brought in the most tabs, and her students won a pizza party. Mrs. April McGuffee's class brought in the second most tabs; they will receive an ice cream party. We are very proud of all of our students for helping with this project.

| SWARTZ WELCOMES GROWING DENDRITES WITH DR. TATE |
|
Swartz Upper Elementary recently welcomed teachers from A.L. Smith, Jack Hayes, Lakeshore, and Swartz Lower Elementary Schools, along with student teachers from ULM, to participate in Dr. Marcia Tate’s inservice: “Worksheets Won’t Grow Dendrites.” Like the previous inservice based on Dr. Tate’s book “Shouting Won’t Grow Dendrites,” this inservice was rich, practical, and much appreciated by all.
Dr. Tate actively involved participants in experiencing 20 Instructional Strategies that engage the brain. The training was punctuated by practical applications, humor, and pertinent information of how to create a brain-compatible environment and how to deliver brain-compatible lessons. The objective was to explore how the brain learns best through different strategies that respond to the child’s needs. Teachers welcomed this insightful training.
Our thanks to Ouachita Parish’s Title II Professional Development Program for providing such a learning opportunity and for Dr. Tate’s book which will provide us with an interesting book-study. Also, for such an educational endeavor to be successful, many different people got involved and we wanted to acknowledge their contribution: Swartz Upper custodial staff made sure that everything was ready and welcoming; Swartz Upper and Lower cafeteria staffs provided participants with delicious snacks, coffee, and refreshments; substitutes and volunteers covered classes. Again, our community’s involvement contributed to our efforts towards the betterment of our teaching and therefore the children’s achievements.

| George Welch Students Place in Statewide Contest |
|
The following students at George Welch Elementary participated in the PTA’s statewide Reflections Contest. The following students placed at the state level. They will receive their trophies at the State PTA Convention held in Baton Rouge in May. Hart Holtzclaw’s entry was forwarded to the National Level for further judging. We are so proud of all of you!

| Central Raises Money for Blood Cancer Patients |
|
Recently, Central participated in the Pennies for Patients fundraiser sponsored by the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. This campaign helps raise money for children with Blood Cancer. Central set a goal of $500, but surpassed the amount raising $2,350.46.
Nine classes raised more than $100 each and received a bronze pennant:
Mrs. Brown, Mrs. Lang, Mrs. Murphy, Mrs. Stevens, Mrs. Walker, Mrs. Bauman, Mrs. Gremillion, Mrs. Hobson, and Mrs. Kennedy.
Also, two classes raised over $200 each and received a silver pennant:
Mrs. Breen and Mrs. Zambie.
Mrs. Zambie was the top class raising $283.06 and will receive a pizza party.
Great Job everyone on collecting money for this great cause and helping make a difference! We are proud of our caring student body and faculty.
