Program and Mission

The Teachers Earning Alternative Certification Here (TEACH) Project was a federal, grant-funded transition to teaching program offered through the University of Louisiana Monroe. Designed to support eligible participants in the Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program, the TEACH Project’s goal was to increase the supply of highly qualified, fully-certified teachers in high need or high poverty school systems in Louisiana. This goal was accomplished through a university-based alternative certification program offered in partnership with high-need area schools.

Although the grant-funded TEACH Project has ended, students may still apply for admission to the Master of Arts in Teaching program to become fully-certified teachers. The MAT program is an online alternative certification and masters program which prepares candidates who have earned a bachelor’s degree in a content area outside the field of education to become teachers.

ULM's MAT program has been helping participants become teachers for over 20 years. Our graduates are in high demand throughout the state in all ares of certification, and the Louisiana Department of Education has ranked our graduates as highly effective in raising student achievement. Both the MAT program and the TEACH program have garnered national attention.

University Partners

Texas A&M University-Kingsville (TAMUK) was a partner university through the TEACH Project.
