More than 300 students from both public and private high schools in Ouachita Parish had the opportunity to learn about business careers in the region by participating in “Back Office Day” at the University of Louisiana at Monroe and CenturyLink. The students began the day by traveling to CenturyLink to hear from human resource directors and other employees about the various business careers available at their headquarters. Following the tour and event at CenturyLink, the students went to the ULM Student Union Building to hear from faculty and area business leaders about careers in management, marketing, accounting, finance, risk management and insurance, computer information services and information technology. The students participated in all five presentations on the different aspects of business. The goal of “Back Office Day” is for students to discover what interests them most and begin to plan for a career in that field. The presentations included a discussion on what a student needs to do to get a degree in that field and the types of jobs available in the community once they obtain the skills. “Back Office Day” is a collaboration of the ULM College of Business and Social Sciences, the Monroe Chamber of Commerce, the Monroe City School Board, the Ouachita Parish School Board, Ouachita Christian, St. Fredrick’s, River Oaks High School and CenturyLink. In addition, a host of local business professionals assisted with the presentations at ULM. Students participating in the event had the opportunity to win one of several scholarships to attend the ULM College of Business, including two valued at $1500 to the accounting program. Organizers for the event hope to spark more interest in business programs and careers by local high school students.
