Ouachita Parish continues to see growth in LEAP scores

The Louisiana Department of Education released the Louisiana Educational Assessment Program (LEAP) Scores on Wednesday, showing two consecutive years of LEAP growth for not only the state of Louisiana but for Ouachita Parish Schools as well.  The annual LEAP test is given to students in grades 3-12 and measures achievement in English, math, science and social studies.

“We are encouraged by the gains that our schools and students have shown during the most recent testing cycle,” Superintendent Todd Guice said. “All gains come from hard work on the part of teachers and students.  Our district and school leadership teams will take the information provided by this data and work to continue to address the needs of all schools and students.”

The Ouachita Parish School System recorded 67 percent of its schools making gains in students achieving mastery or advanced.  Curtis Pate, Director of Assessment and Accountability said, “We are also pleased with the success our schools had in raising student achievement in several subgroups. Ouachita Parish achieved above the state average in its percentage of proficiency in subgroups, including economically disadvantaged students, students with disabilities, Hispanic/Latino students and foster care. The district also saw gains in subgroup performance, including military, foster care, economically disadvantaged, African American, Asian, Hispanic/Latino students and students with disabilities.

Thirty-seven percent of Ouachita Parish students (grades 3-8) performed at the proficiency level; 5 percent above the state average of 32 percent. “Ouachita Parish has set high expectations for student learning, and it shows in our test scores,” said Maribeth Holzer, Elementary/Middle Assessment and Accountability Coordinator for Ouachita Parish School System. “We have been very intentional about supporting our teachers in classroom instruction, which leads to higher academic achievement. We are proud of our students and teachers.”

The district had 35 perfect scores in grades 3-12: 16 perfect scores in ELA, 13 in math, 2 in social studies and 4 in science. Of those 14 were in elementary, 12 in middle, and 9 in high school.  Approximately 50 percent of elementary, 70 percent of middle, and 60 percent of high schools made gains in students achieving mastery and advanced scores.

"Our goal as educators is to ensure students are on the path to graduate high school being college or career ready,” said Haley Holley, Assessment and Accountability Coordinator of High Schools for Ouachita Parish School System. “Our assessment data trends are continuing to show Ouachita Parish is making tremendous strides in increasing student preparedness after high school.”
