Ouachita Parish teachers attend National Council of Teachers in Mathematics in Washington D.C.

Five teachers from the Ouachita Parish School System recently visited Washington D.C. to take part in the National Council of Teachers in Mathematics.

Maggie Acree, 6-12 Math Instructional Coordinator at Ouachita Parish School Board, along with West Ouachita’s Amanda Bonney and Kayla Maier, West Monroe’s Janyce Rawls and Calhoun Middle’s Lauren Howe spent the last week of October learning new strategies and how to stay current with their knowledge of secondary mathematics.

Attending the NCTM 2023 Expo in Washington, DC, with four OPSB math educators was an incredible experience,” Ms. Howe said. “We spent 2.5 days attending many wonderful sessions led by leading mathematics educators and learning about strategies and tools to help our students succeed in math.  Another highlight of the trip was collaborating with thousands of math colleagues from across the US and even other countries.  Not only was the conference amazing, but having an opportunity to visit our nation’s capital was unforgettable.”

The program’s theme for 2023 was “Creating Spaces for Change through Community: It Starts with You”. The expo included inspiring education sessions from leading mathematics educators and expert keynote speakers and leaders in mathematics education.

At NCTM, I learned the importance of connectivity,” Bonney said. “As teachers, we need to connect to one another and share thoughts and ideas that benefit the education system. Within the classroom, we need to teach mathematical connections; all subjects are interconnected to one another, not just isolated concepts.”
