NEW Middle School Teacher of the Year: Ms. Sequanna King, Riser Middle

Ouachita Parish School System is proud to announce our 2023-24 New Teachers of the Year for the district. These teachers are in their first year not only in the district, but in their careers.

The Middle School Teacher of the Year is Sequanna King, an ELA teacher from Riser Middle School. Ms. King graduated in 2022 from Louisiana Tech University with a Bachelor’s degree in Biology Pre-Medicine and a minor in Chemistry with the intention of becoming a nurse.

I decided to become an educator because I fell in love with the positive impact I have in the development and growth of our young children,” Ms. King said. “I have always strived for the goal of being a part of something bigger than myself, being able to bring about a change that positively impacts our next generation not only through emotional or moral stability, but through education as well.

In addition to her teaching responsibilities, Ms. King is also the cheer coach and sponsor, the BETA Club Co-Sponsor, the Homecoming Committee chairperson and the Black History Program chairperson.

Ms. King is a first year teacher that started out last year mid-year,” said DJ Davis, Riser Middle principal. “She was a long term substitute last year and was determined to come back full time this year. She is an original pre-med major but has since found a passion for teaching!

“Ms. King has truly embraced this opportunity and has totally immersed herself in the expectations of our school’s culture. She has shown total respect for herself and others, has come motivated to do her best, and she shows true self-control! She brings a spirit of excellence and an energy to the campus that is warranted.”

The New Teacher of the Year program through the Louisiana Department of Education recognizes and celebrates some of the state’s most exceptional new educators. These candidates reflect excellence and expertise in the field, guiding students of all backgrounds and abilities to achieve success.

Ms. King will now advance to the state-level competition, which will take place in Spring 2024.
